AC Myths

AC Myths in Wilson

Providing Accurate Information about Air Conditioning Systems

There are many myths that float around in the HVAC world. In fact, there are so many, that we can’t keep all of them straight! Fortunately, at B & J Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc., we can lay all those silly myths to rest as we are knowledgeable and experienced in the HVAC industry.

One common air conditioning myth we’d like to settle once and for all is that "All the technician has to do is stick his gauges on the unit to tell if it is low on refrigerant."

The Truth

Believe it or not, there’s no gauge to measure the level of refrigerant in a unit. The gauge that technicians use during repair or replacement jobs is one of the many tools used in the process that will inform our crews if the system is low or overcharged. Refrigerant gauges measure the pressure inside the AC unit.

As temperatures change inside and outside of the house, so does the pressure. Other factors that will change the temperature and pressure include:

  • The amount of air flowing through the unit’s coils
  • Dirty filters and blower wheels
  • Weak motors
  • Duct restrictions

With this being said, it’s vital for technicians to inspect, and if needed, fix any airflow issues before making any adjustments to the refrigerant levels. If the job isn’t done correctly, poor airflow could potentially lead to an overcharged unit, which can cause major damage to the A/C unit. Matters can get even worse if the damage is not detected for months or years.
